Common issues we see with cover letters

What are common mistakes we see in cover letters?

A common mistake we see with cover letters is length. Your cover letter should only be 1/3 to ½ page maximum. This will help you create a cover letter that someone will read.

Other cover letter mistakes include writing a generic letter that is not topical and doesn’t address the specific job you’re applying for. This means tailoring your experience to meet the employer’s specific needs as outlined in their job description. The cover letter is not about you, it’s about how your experience will solve their specific problem.

Another common mistake we see is using a template cover letter. If you can copy and paste a different company name and job title into your letter, and it still makes sense, that is not an effective cover letter. Please take the time to research the company and job title to write a personalized letter.
